Building Resilience

As a physician, we are all resilient, we might just not always feel like it. Getting into medical school and getting through a residency program takes a lot of resilience and adaptability. What does resilience mean?

The American psychological association defines it as, The process and outcome of successfully adapting to difficult or challenging life experiences, especially through mental, emotional and behavioural flexibility and ability to adjust to external and internal demands.

Resilience is not about suppressing emotions or “toughing it out.” Instead, it involves cultivating self-awareness, adaptability, and a proactive approach to challenges. It allows us to maintain our passion for medicine while protecting our mental, emotional, and physical well-being.

One important aspect to take into account is that resilience is a skill that can be learned and it can empower you to grow.

How To Improve Resilience

Get connected

A supportive network of colleagues, mentors, friends, and family can make a significant difference in resilience. Seek out like-minded professionals who understand the unique challenges of medicine and lean on them during difficult times. Coaching, therapy, or peer support groups can provide valuable perspectives and encouragement.

Set healthy boundaries

Boundaries are essential in preventing burnout. Learn to say no to excessive commitments, delegate tasks when possible, and establish clear limits between work and personal life. Protecting your time and energy is not selfish; it is essential for sustaining your ability to care for others.

Reconnect with your purpose
When facing exhaustion and disillusionment, revisit the reasons you chose medicine in the first place. Reflect on meaningful patient interactions and the positive impact you have on lives. Keeping a gratitude journal or engaging in activities that reignite your passion for medicine can help combat burnout. Reflect what are your goals, make them clear and attainable.

Stay hopeful and embrace flexibility

Medicine is an ever-evolving field, and adaptability is crucial. Instead of resisting change, approach it with curiosity and openness. Whether it’s integrating new technology, adjusting workflows, or exploring non-traditional career paths, flexibility fosters resilience and long-term satisfaction.

Foster wellness without guilt

Many physicians struggle with the notion of self-care, viewing it as a luxury rather than a necessity. However, just as we advise patients to prioritize their health, we must practice what we preach. Regular exercise, proper nutrition, adequate sleep, and mindfulness practices such as meditation or journaling can significantly impact our ability to manage stress.

Develop a growth mindset

Embrace challenges as opportunities for learning rather than threats to competence. Reframing setbacks as valuable experiences helps build resilience by fostering adaptability and reducing fear of failure. Remember, perfection is an illusion—progress is what truly matters.

Building resilience is an ongoing journey, not a one-time achievement. By prioritizing self-care, setting boundaries, fostering a growth mindset, leaning on support systems, reconnecting with purpose, and embracing change, we can create sustainable, fulfilling careers in medicine. As physicians, we have the capacity not just to survive—but to thrive.

If you’re struggling with burnout or looking to enhance your resilience, consider working with a physician coach. You don’t have to navigate this journey alone; support is available to help you rediscover joy and fulfillment in your career.
